Again, another wonderful December is upon us in Boise, ID. The holiday season is in full swing, and there are plenty of exciting things to do in Boise in December.

I’ve always thought December in Boise was such a magical time of year. Aside from the Christmas spirit, there’s also plenty of snow and outdoor activities to do. Whether it’s jumping into skiing near Boise Idaho, or simply just enjoying the snow-covered mountain views, there’s something for everyone in this beautiful city.

This 2024 edition will highlight some of the best things to do in Boise this December, as well as must-see events and activities that you shouldn’t miss out on. So, let’s dive in!

Winter Festivals and Events

Idaho Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting

Saturday, December 3, 2024, Time: TBD

The Idaho Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting is the perfect way to kick off the season, bringing the community together with twinkling lights and holiday spirit. According to KTVB, the tree will be cut from State Street on November 25 and set up to light up the Capitol on December 3. Bring a cozy blanket, sip some hot cocoa, and soak in the magic of Boise in December.

Meridian Night Parade 

December 6, 2024, 6 – 8 pm

Spend the evening at the Hidden Gem Events to stay warm and enjoy some hot cocoa while waiting for the Meridian Night Parade to begin. Here you can judge the gingerbread houses and more!

Boise Holiday Parade

December 7th, 2024

This Saturday, December 7th, the annual Boise Holiday Parade will be making its way through downtown Boise. This festive event starts at 10 am at Downtown Boise 11th and Jefferson. The parade features locally built holiday floats, rad cars, local businesses, school choirs, and even Santa himself.

Just when you thought the holiday fun in Boise couldn’t get any better, hold onto your Santa hats because we’ve got more! Don’t even think about calling it a day after the Boise Holiday Parade because, at 6 pm on December 7, 2024, the Treasure Valley Night Light Parade is set to illuminate our evening with a dazzling display of lights and holiday spirit!

Downtown Meridian Shop Night

December 12th, 2024

Meridian is also holding its own Shop Night downtown! This event will have food, drinks, and even a  special visit from Santa itself!

Take a stroll and even dine at the many local restaurants and shops while enjoying live music, carriage rides, and a festive atmosphere. It’s definitely an event worth checking out!

Idaho State Museum Holiday First Thursday

December 5, 2024

On the first Thursday of every month, the Idaho State Museum offers free admission from 5-9 pm. But this December, they will include the preview of their 4th annual Winter Wonder Village. They will also be featuring local Idaho Artists and Vendors. This and other events will be happening at 610 Julia Davis Dr., Boise, ID, 83706, so don’t miss out!

Breakfast with Santa at Zoo Boise

Saturdays December 7th and 14th, 2024

If you didn’t know, two Saturdays this December, Zoo Boise is holding a Breakfast with Santa event! Take your kids and have breakfast with Santa while also enjoying zoo animals. This event includes a hot breakfast buffet, crafts for the children, and exclusive early entry into Zoo Boise!

Winter Wonder Village: Family Night

If you want to experience something different this December, Winter Wonder Village is a must-see. It’s a family-friendly event that doesn’t just feature the typical Santa and Christmas activities, but your kids can also participate in crafts, carols, and even have cocoa.

There will be winter-themed crafts, including snowflake-making and cookie decorating. And don’t forget to take your kids’ photo with Santa!

Skiing and Snowboarding at Bogus Basin

Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area is the perfect place to hit the slopes and enjoy some winter fun. With over 2,600 acres of skiable terrain and multiple chairlifts and runs, this ski area caters to all levels of experience.

Aside from skiing and snowboarding, you can also try out other activities such as tubing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Ice Skating at the Downtown Boise Glide On Grove Rink

For a more leisurely outdoor activity, head to the downtown Boise Glide on Grove for some ice skating. Located in The Grove Plaza, this rink is open daily during December from 11 am to 9 pm. It’s a great way to enjoy the winter weather while practicing your skating skills. Plus, it’s a great activity for the whole family!

Winter Hiking

Don’t let the cold weather stop you from enjoying the outdoors. Bundle up and go on a winter hike at one of Boise’s many hiking trails. Just be sure to pack some warm clothing, water, and snacks.
